A student was found to have a pair of knives inside a bookbag at King’s Fork Middle School Monday.

According to Suffolk Police, a school administrator told an officer that knives were found at the school in the student’s bookbag.

Police said no one was injured or threatened in the incident.

The school’s principal, Darrell Medley, sent an email to parents about the incident.

“Our administrative team found two knives in the possession of a student on campus,” Medley said. “At no time were any students or staff members in danger, and school administration took immediate disciplinary action. The items were confiscated and given to the School Resource Officer. The matter is currently under investigation.

“Parents, please discuss the ramifications of bringing weapons onto our campus. We want to ensure that Kings Fork Middle School remains a safe learning environment for all. Thank you for your continued support.”

In the 2021-22 Suffolk Public Schools student code of conduct, it notes that weapon possession not involving a firearm would receive a Level 4 response, with those interventions involving “the long-term removal of a student from the school environment due to the severity of the behavior. These interventions focus on protecting the safety of the school community and ending destructive/dangerous behavior.” Police are also notified.

Typically, with a student infraction, teachers and administrators are to begin at the lowest available disciplinary consequence and only give higher consequences for repeat offenses or more serious infractions, according to the student code of conduct. For weapon possession incidents, Level 4 is the earliest level of response provided.
