Suffolk Public Schools staff celebrated Kilby Shores Elementary students Channing Douglas and Hannah Parker for designing their own SPS logos. Alongside their families, the two students held an artist signing for their creative work, which officially serve as logos for the Suffolk Public Schools Food and Nutrition Trucks.
Kilby Shores Art Teacher Angela Salerno, who taught both Douglas and Parker, expressed that she was “extremely proud” of her former students while detailing the art contest that led to their win.
“I had used this contest as a lesson in teams (Talented Art) last year. We studied advertisements and what makes a good piece of art for a contest. We reviewed the guidelines, and the students went to work. If they didn’t finish their art in class, they took it home and brought it back to Talented Art, where I put them all up on the chalkboard, and we critiqued the art,” Salerno said.
Salerno said that after critique and students working on needed areas, the art was submitted for the contest. She expressed how surprised she was to find out her two former students had won.
“This is such a great idea that SPS Food and Nutrition had. It is a fabulous way to promote food and nutrition, but also to promote the arts. It is a winning combination,” she said. “I was especially happy that I got to see my students again since they have moved on to Middle School this year. But it is like I told them on their last day of 5th grade, ‘I will see them and their art again in the future.’”
