The Nansemond River High School baseball team followed up a dominating win on Wednesday with a furious rally on Thursday morning against York High School out of York, S.C. during a tournament in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Warriors trailed 11-2 halfway through the third inning, but rallied with six runs in the third and five runs in the sixth inning to ultimately win 13-12.

Nansemond River head coach Mark Stuffel said his team played bad defense initially, allowing five runs in the second and six runs in the third. Senior Matt Boone started the game on the mound.

“He didn’t throw it badly,” Stuffel said. “He just didn’t have defense behind him.”

The defense improved and sophomore Ethan Woodruff took the mound to ultimately get the win.

“He did a good job of pitching the middle innings for us,” Stuffel said.

Junior Mike Parmentier finished the game for the save.

Both Boone and Woodruff were active on the offensive end, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively. They contributed to 11 total Warriors hits for the game.

“Everybody’s hitting, it’s been pretty spread out,” Stuffel said. “Everybody’s chipping in.”

Nansemond River (6-3, 4-3) faces Rock Hill’s own Northwestern High School today at 1 p.m.
