Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Deshaun Wethington, junior for King’s Fork High School football: He produced a spectacular performance on Friday night, carrying the ball 28 times for 339 yards and two touchdowns against visiting rival Grassfield High School. Far from a blowout game against a weak opponent, the Bulldogs didn’t achieve the victorious 19-10 final score until he ran 80 yards for a touchdown with 4:42 left in the game.
  • Ashley Hiltabrand, junior for Nansemond River High School field hockey: She played a pivotal role in both of the Lady Warriors’ dramatic wins over its cross-town rivals last week. On Monday, she scored a must-have goal in strokes, aiding the victory over visiting King’s Fork High School. On Thursday, she scored the game-winner in sudden death overtime against host Lakeland High School.
  • Cole Christiansen, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football: His team, struggling due to injuries, visited the defending state champions on Friday and fell 62-40, but he somehow still managed to be a bright spot on defense. He recorded 16 tackles and three sacks against Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School in his effort to bolster the Saints defense that is suffering the most from the injury bug.
