Suffolk girls to dance in ‘Nutcracker’

It’s that time of the year for Mouse Kings, dancing snowflakes, living nutcrackers and Sugar Plum Fairies.

Two Suffolk girls will be dancing in the perennial winter wonderland that is “The Nutcracker” when the Richmond Ballet performs at Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall on Dec. 12-14.

Madie Baker, left, and Cassidy Spencer pause for a photo before practice for “The Nutcracker,” which they will both perform in Dec. 12-14 at Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall.

Madie Baker, 10, and Cassidy Spencer, 9, both attend Isle of Wight Academy but go to different dance schools — Mountcastle School of Dance and Dynamic Movements, respectively. Cassidy, the daughter of Jennifer and Matt Spencer, was cast in last year’s performance of the ballet, and her entire IWA class attended to see her in action.

This year, the Spencers let the Bakers know of the opportunity to audition, and Madie — who, like Cassidy, has seven years of ballet experience — also auditioned.

Both girls are excited to have their roles and are not yet experiencing any stage fright, they said.

“It’s fun,” said Madie, the daughter of Kelly and Blake Baker. She plays a table cook in the ballet. Her favorite part so far has been practicing on stage with far more experienced ballerinas.

“There’s a lot of good dancers there,” she said.

Seeing the older dancers was “a big deal for them,” Jennifer Spencer said.

Cassidy plays one of the children who appear from under a rather tall woman’s skirt in the second act of the ballet. She has a lot of responsibility at the end of the dance, as she is tasked with holding up the skirt so all the other children can get back under it, at the same time as she pulls down her tall headpiece so she also can get under.

She said “coming out of the skirt” is her favorite part and that she recently “got to practice with the ears and the dress,” which made her more comfortable with her responsibilities.

The girls have been practicing in Norfolk every Sunday since September and have only had to go to Richmond once.
