Woman pulled from water near bridge-tunnel

Suffolk Fire and Rescue retrieved a woman from near the southern base of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on Monday after she parked her car and began to walk out into the water, according to Virginia State Police.

State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya stated that the woman, whom police did not identify, had parked her 2011 Nissan on the southbound shoulder lane of Interstate 664, near the Suffolk Inspection Station.

Local dispatchers received a call from a passerby at 9:04 a.m. reporting they saw someone in the water, according to a Suffolk news release.

The woman was reportedly waist-deep in the water and hanging onto a pylon, city spokeswoman Diana Klink stated. She was treated for hypothermia then taken by ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

According to Anaya, the Nissan is in storage after being removed from the scene.
