Fun for all family generations will be taking place at Lilley Farms starting on Oct. 1. Owners of the farm have put together a pumpkin patch and corn maze at 2800 Tyre Neck Road in Chesapeake.

“We have been wanting to do it for years,” said Carolyn Lilley of the corn maze. “Our grandson thought it would be a really good idea for us to do a maze now. It’s all about family fun,” she said.

After planting the corn in the summer months, they planned out their maze path and eventually mowed it into the shape they wanted. It is shaped like a house, Lilley said. Participants can enjoy wandering through the cornfield as they outline the house’s chimney, windows and attic, as well as the sun shining over its roof.

Guests can also visit the pumpkin patch while at the farm.

“There are pumpkins all over the place,” Lilley said. Lilley Farms grows both heirloom and carving pumpkins, and guests can select one to cut and take home to carve, eat or simply put on display.

Lilly farms has been passed down through the Lilley family for almost 100 years, since the family moved from North Carolina. When they got to the Hampton Roads area in 1919, they started their farm in Chesapeake. Now, the family all works together on the farm.

“It’s a family thing,” Lilley said.

For many years, the family has been growing various kinds of trees, Lilley said. Crepe myrtles, red maples, Japanese maples, dogwoods, oaks and elms are among the many kinds they grow. They also grow small grain crops, she said. Along with pumpkins and corn, the farm also raises wheat, soybeans and strawberries that harvest during different times of the year.

Entrance to the maze is free for ages 3 and under, $4 for ages 4 to 12 and $5 for ages 13 and up. Hours of operation will be Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 6:30 p.m., as well as Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, they are willing to make prior accommodations for larger groups to schedule alternate times, Lilley said.
