Portsmouth police investigate fatal crash

Portsmouth police are continuing their investigation into an early morning two-vehicle accident that has left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to a press release from Portsmouth.

Dispatchers with the Suffolk Police Department received a 911 call notifying them of a vehicle driving the wrong way on 164 westbound, heading toward Portsmouth, according to the release. When Suffolk officers arrived in the area, they found a two-vehicle accident with injuries located in Portsmouth on 164 westbound between the Towne Point Road and College Drive exits. Portsmouth Police dispatch received notification of the accident at 3:33 a.m. and sent officers to the scene.

According to investigators, the driver of another vehicle passed a small SUV driving the wrong way on the westbound side of 164 and called 911, the release stated. However, before police could respond to the area, the small SUV collided head on with another vehicle. When Suffolk officers arrived at the scene, they found a black Ford Escape, driven by a 38-year-old female, and a purple Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by a 25-year-old male, with heavy damage.

The driver of the PT Cruiser suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is expected to survive, according to the release. The driver of the Escape suffered life-threatening injuries, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene by medics.  

At this time, investigators are not releasing the name of the victim pending notification. When more information becomes available, an update will follow.
