“Sometimes you just run into a game where things just don’t go your way,” Lady Warriors coach Gabe Rogers said. “(The Lady Bruins) didn’t make any mistakes, (and) we hit the ball right where they were standing.”

Nansemond River senior Lauren Maddrey pitched the entire game, throwing five strikeouts and giving up only one walk and five hits.

“She put us in a position to win,” Rogers said. “We just didn’t score runs.”

Western Branch’s two runs came in the third inning as a result of two Lady Warrior errors.

The Lady Warriors actually out-hit the Lady Bruins 7-5, serving as evidence of Rogers’ statement that his girls were having good at-bats, but they were simply hitting the ball right to defenders when timely hits were needed.

He praised senior Jaclyn Mounie in particular. “She went 3-for-3 with three singles and hit the ball hard all night. So, she had almost half of our hits.”

Rogers noted that while senior Lauren Davis and junior Kelly Lafferty did not have hits in the game, they still had good at-bats.

The Lady Bruins’ defense had a good night.

“They had two key double plays that ended innings for us,” Rogers said. “They’re a good team.”

He said he hopes the game serves as a wake-up call for his girls.

“I know what we’ve done in the past and the success that we’ve had in the past, but that’s the past,” he said. “This is the first time in a long time we hadn’t scored any runs.”

Rogers said the Lady Warriors have to re-establish who they are as a team.

“I would like to see our team come out of the gates firing all cylinders,” he said. “We have to change something that’s going to start producing runs at the very beginning of the game. It’s got to start happening.”

Nansemond River (7-2) is set to host Great Bridge High School on Friday.

Referring to his squad, Rogers said, “I’m curious to see what team shows up on Friday. It’s going to be interesting to see how we respond.”
