Avis Irene Synco

Avis Irene Synco, 80, of Troy, died Monday, August 23, 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 25, 1999, at First United Methodist Church of Troy with Rev. Danny Doss officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park in Troy with Dillard Funeral Home in Troy directing.

She was born in Lockhart, Ala., moved to Florala at an early age where she graduated high school before moving to Troy, Ala., her home for the remainder of her life. She received a B.S. Degree from Troy State University and a Masters Degree in Education from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn. She taught school for 37 years, most of them spent in Pike County. Miss Synco was an active member of First United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities, such as teachers, President of United Methodist Women, Circle officer and member of the choir. She spent many years working for the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as local president, district officer and counselor for the Junior Leadership Conference at Huntingdon College. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a professional teacher’s organization; the Troy Music Study Club, and a volunteer at Edge Regional Medical Center. She spent many hours collecting money for The American Cancer Society and playing the piano for Pike Manor Nursing Home.

Miss Synco was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Synco of Troy, and four brothers, Tillman Synco of Troy; Carl Synco of Dothan; Theron Synco of Alexander City; and Ray Synco of Troy.

Survivors include one brother, Howard and his wife Marie Synco of Montgomery; four nieces, Shirley Washburn of Ozark; Glenell Giles of Troy; Cornelia Synco of Dothan; and Sherry Carlson of Birmingham; two nephews, Charles and Thomas Synco of Troy; sister-in-law, Nell Whitman of Troy and several great-nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ken Washburn, Jim Carlson, JimBo Carlson, Brian Carlson, Charles Synco, and Thomas Synco.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Troy First United Methodist Church or to the charity of choice.

Visitation was held between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 24, 1999, at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy.
