Sting goes 1-1 in first days of World Series

After dropping their first game 4-3 to the Hollywood Hill Barracudas (Fla.) in extra innings on Monday, the Southside Sting (Suffolk) bounced back to take a 9-0 victory from the Carolina Cool Cats (S.C.) in the National Softball Association World Series in Salem on Tuesday. Micah Smith struck out five for the Sting, who never allowed a runner to reach third base in Tuesday’s win.

Jeanne Bristow batted in two runs and Lindsay Kelly knocked in another for the Sting, who return to action today at 4 p.m.

Nansemond River to hold sports meeting, physicals

Nansemond River High Sch-ool will be holding a Fall Sports Information Meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 in the school auditorium. All parents and/or players interested in participating in fall sports should attend.

The school will also be offering free physicals for athletes at 5 p.m. on July 30. Physicals are mandatory for participation in school sports.

Nansemond River Golf officials to play in Pro-Am

Jeffrey Yarborough, golf cou-rse superintendent of the Nansemond River Golf Club, and John Wagner, a board member for the course, will join the field for the John Deere Golf and Turf Superintendent Pro-Am tournament at the Tournament Players Club in Silvis, Ill. on July 22.

Yarborough and Wagner are one of 10 team selected by random drawing to play in the event, the final two days of which will be broadcast worldwide on CBS.

Liberty Golf Classic to be played Sept. 26

The Liberty Golf Classic will be held at the Nansemond River Golf Club on Sept. 26. Held to benefit Gideons International, a group that specializes in distributing Bibles in 175 countries worldwide, the tournament will begin at noon.

The cost is $75 per person, which includes a green fee, golf cart, driving range, snacks, drinks, and an open pit barbecue roast.

Chipping and putting contests begin at 11 a.m. For more information, call 539-3511.

Bennetts Creek Little League fall baseball and fast-pitch softball pre-registration is currently open via the league Web site at www.bennettscreek.org.

Youth ages 7-16 as of Aug. 1st are eligible.

Payment of fees will be accepted on July 30 and 31 from 6-9 PM in the board room behind Driver Elementary School.
