Roberts bats in winning run as SYAA wins, 4-3

J.R. Roberts singled in Adam Keeling in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the game-winning run in the Suffolk Youth Athletic Association (SYAA) Super Colt team’s 4-3 victory over Kempsville on Tuesday evening in the Southeastern district tournament at Lynnhaven. The game was the top-seeded SYAA team’s tournament opener.

Steve Giermak blasted a two-run homer in the second inning for SYAA. Mike Brown struck out nine in 4 2/3 innings of work, and Bo Garner finished things up.

SYAA will next hit the Lynnhaven field at 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

Softball tournament rescheduled for Saturday

The Holland Community Ce-nter softball tournament has been rescheduled for Sunday, July 28 at noon at the Holland Community Center.

Liberty Golf Classic to be played Sept. 26

The Liberty Golf Classic will be held at the Nansemond River Golf Club on Sept. 26. The tournament will begin at noon. The cost is $75 per person, which includes a green fee, golf cart, driving range, snacks, drinks, and an open pit barbecue roast. Chipping and putting contests begin at 11 a.m. For more information, call 539-3511.

Baseball, softball signups begin July 30

Bennetts Creek Little League fall baseball and fast-pitch softball pre-registration is open via the league Web site at www.bennettscreek.org. Youths ages 7-16 as of Aug. 1 are eligible. Payment of fees will be accepted from 6-9 p.m. on July 30-31 in the boardroom behind Driver Elementary School.
