James E. Byrd

James Edward Byrd, 91, an amateur archaeologist and local historian, died on August 11, 2002.

Born January 29, 1911, in Suffolk, he was the son of the late James Robert and Rosa Lee Holland Byrd and widower of Helen Bateman Byrd.

Mr. Byrd was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and the Baraca Class, Suffolk Masonic Lodge No. 30 and the Nansemond-Suffolk Historical Society. He was an electrician with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

After finding his first arrowhead at the age of 12, he became intrigued with Native American culture, driftwood and poetry. Over the years, he amassed one of the finest collections of relics, artifacts and driftwood, most of which now rest in local museums.

Survivors include his daughters, Janet L. Caswell, her husband, Joe of North Stonington, Ct., Betty

Ann Byrd of Santa Fe., N.M., Sandy B. Barnes, her husband, Howard, of Suffolk; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, in Suffolk Christian Church by the Rev. Michael D. Halley with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to

8:30

p.m. and other times at 136 Kenyon Rd., the home of Sandy Barnes.

Tiffani M. Everett

Tiffani M. Everett of Taylor Road., Chesapeake, departed this life on Aug. 9, 2002, at Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk, after an extended illness.

She was the daughter of Samuel and Barbara Warren Jones of Suffolk and Floyd and LaFon Everett of Richmond.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m., Aug. 14, in Piney Grove Baptist Church, 1071 Carrsville Hwy., Franklin, with Pastor Steven Blunt delivering the eulogy. The interment will be in Suffolk at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens on Shoulders Hill Rd.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lupus Foundation. Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St., Franklin, is handling funeral arrangements.

Joseph P. Johnson

Mr. Joseph P. Johnson, 70, of 6195 Yellow Hammer Rd., Zuni, died on Aug. 9, 2002 in Obici Hospital. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2002, in Morning Star Baptist Church by Elder David L. Brooks. Interment will be in the Morning Star Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. Crocker Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael T. Naylor

Michael Traver Naylor, 51, died on Aug. 7, 2002 at Wyoming Medical Center. The funeral service was held on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at Highland Cemetery in Casper, Wy.

Ernest W. Ricks Jr.

Mr. Ernest W. Ricks Jr., 84, of 318 Culloden St., died on Aug. 11, 2002, at Obici Hospital.

A native of Nansemond County, he was a son of the late Ernest Ricks Sr. and Martha Eley.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Hargrave and Chinell (Lawrence) Sanders, both of Suffolk; one son, Wesley F. Ricks of Suffolk; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Bivins, Marion Briggs, and Frances Pittman, all of Suffolk; one brother, Martin L. Ricks of Suffolk; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at 1 p.m. in Crocker Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. A. E. Wiggins. Interment will be in Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
