Lakeland gets to 3-1 with defeat of Franklin

The Lakeland golf team moved its record to 3-1 with a 315-372 defeat of Franklin Tuesday at Smithfield Downs. Franklin’s Matt Hopkins was the meet’s medalist with a score of 73.

Holland Athletic Assoc. signups end Aug. 24

The Holland Athletic Association will have player registration for football and cheering at the ballfields in Holland from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday (practice will then be held from 10 a.m. to noon). Players must be at least 10, and cannot turn 14 before Jan. 1, 2003. Copy of proof of age will be required. For more information, call 657-6823 or 657-6240.

Sheriff’s Office softball tourney starts Sept. 21

The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office will hold a women’s slow pitch softball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21. The entry fee is $150, and eight teams will compete. Deadline to sign up is Sept. 13. Sting softball team to hold September tryouts

Smithfield softball team to hold tryouts Sept. 14

A Smithfield select softball team for girls age 10 and under is being formed. Tryouts will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 7-8 at Nike Park for all positions except pitcher and catchers. Pitching and catching tryouts will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Nike Park. Tournament team selection will be made by Sept. 17.
