Angelo Beal dropped in seven points and Kevon Rountree six more as the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Middle School seventh grade boys’ team got on the high side of .500, moving their record to 2-1 with a 27-12 victory over host King’s Fork (KF) Middle School on Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines used an 11-2 scoring jaunt in the second half to ice their win over the Jaguars (0-3).
&uot;I knew we’d win the whole second half, because everybody was getting open,&uot; said Beal.
Stopping the Cats had been a problem for JFK in the first half, Rountree said. &uot;We got our hands up in the second half,&uot; he said. &uot;If we keep doing that, we should win all the rest of our games.&uot;
Vince Hill and Rountree opened the game with six quick points for JFK, but Lorenzo Worrell and Eric Silver scored four points in 30 seconds to cut the lead to two. Dominique Morgan dropped in a jumper for JFK, but Silver and Donald Hunter broke through for two more buckets to tie the score with 10 minutes left. But Larry Mitchell banked home a basket with eight minutes to play, and Beal laid in a basket to extend the lead to 12-8.
James King swished a pair of free throws to get to within two, but Morgan and Rountree scored in the last minute to end the half up 16-10.
The Wolverine defense played with the ferocity of its animal namesake in the second half, as Silver’s jumper with 4:28 left was the Jaguars’ only points. Beal tossed in five points as JFK ran away.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Jaguars (3-0) remained undefeated with a 10-4 victory over the Lady Wolverines (1-2). Shaquana Newman dropped in four points in the win.
&uot;We stayed undefeated by keeping our star players up, like me, Latonia Gatling, and Chris-tina Parker,&uot; said Newman.
