Doris Smith of Newport News held off the Lake Kennedy Clippers 42-40 at Booker T. Washington Recr-eation Center on Wednesday evening. Clarence Wilson led the Clippers with 21 points, and Teron Bell knocked in 10.

&uot;This was a good improvement over some earlier play,&uot; said Clipper coach Michael White. &uot;We made some rookie mistakes, but my team had its usual spirit and drive tonight.&uot;

His team is tentatively scheduled to play in Hampton at the Old Hampton Community Center on Oct. 26.
