A Battery Avenue man died at the scene early Sunday morning as a car in which he was a passenger slammed into a water-filled ditch along Route 58.

Lawtrawn Armstrong, 25, was riding in a vehicle with a friend, Jerome Mizell, of the 700 block of Brook Avenue, who was injured in the accident that took place at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The car veered into the median strip and came to rest in the watery ditch.

Mizell was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and he is listed in critical condition.

Armstrong and Mizell were traveling in a rented Mazda when the accident took place about a mile from the Chesapeake city line, according to Suffolk Police Officer M.E. Simpkins.

Simpkins said police recovered what is believed to be cocaine from one of the victims, but he added that it’s unclear whether drugs, high speed or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

He also said that with the rain on Sunday morning, wet roads might have played a part in the accident.
