Minnette Dashiell Starkey, 84, died January 13, 2003.
Born Dec. 9, 1918, in Smithfield, she was the daughter of the late Minnette Vellines and Thomas Ashby Dashiell Sr. and grew up in Suffolk. She was a graduate of Suffolk High School and attended Mary Washington College.
She was a member of Oxford United Methodist where she was a former member of the board, served as trustee, sang in the choir and worked with the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She worked at the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce for 27 years as the administrative assistant.
Over the years she was a member of the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society, Constantia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Suffolk Art League, and Westover Garden Club. She served as a volunteer for Obici Hospital and on the Board of the Salvation Army.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Bruce Sanderson and her husband, John Andrew Sanderson of Charlottesville; brother, T. Ashby Dashiell Jr. and his wife, Margaret Saunders Dashiell of Suffolk; nieces, Francis Dashiell Slouch and her husband, Steve; and Margaret Ashby Dashiell; and her great niece, Nadia Dashiell Wetzell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oxford United Methodist Church by the Rev. E. Clifton Whitlock with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church until service time. Memorial donations may be made to Oxford United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society or the Salvation Army of Suffolk.
