The Division of Motor Vehicles and City of Suffolk are observing the Lee-Jackson government holiday today and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday.

DMV will resume normal working hours Saturday, Jan. 18, and the City of Suffolk will resume normal hours on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Suffolk City Schools, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, and local banks will be closed Monday only in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, and resume normal hours Tuesday. If the predicted snowstorm reaches our area, schools may have to join the Lee-Jackson observers, but will have to make that day up before the school year ends.

Major stores such as Sentry Food Stores, Food Lion, Belk and Wal-Mart will not observe holidays and operate at normal working hours through them.

Today’s trash collection will take place Saturday and will be one day behind beginning Tuesday.

DMV anticipates the days before and after holiday closings to be extremely busy. The agency encourages customers to plan head and, if they need to visit a Customer Service Center (CSC) to visit earlier in the week or later the following week. All DMV CSCs are closed on Wednesdays.

Many customers don’t have to visit a DMV office for service. The agency offers four self-service options – mail, telephone (1-888-337-4782) Internet (www.dmvnow.com) and extra Teller, an ATM-like machine located outside 35 offices. Customers can find out if they’re eligible to use self-service methods by checking their renewal notice or calling DMV at 1-866-DMVLINE.
