Aaron Smith started things off for DRE with a layup just 25 seconds into the contest, and Josh Karahoes doubled the lead to 4-0. Holloman stole an inbound pass for another basket, but Kenneth Wright and Trevor Toms knocked in four quick points to cut the lead to 6-4 with three minutes to play.
Carson took over the offense for his team, knocking in seven consecutive points for a 13-4 lead a minute into the second quarter. Wright scored for NE, but Holloman scored four points and Karahoes two for a 19-9 halftime advantage.
DRE showed its skills on defense in the second half, holding NE to only three points, all of which came on free throws. Meanwhile, five different players scored another 19 points for DRE to ice the game.
&uot;This was practice for me,&uot; said Carson, who uses the YMCA league to sharpen his skills for the Lakeland High School junior varsity team. &uot;There’s a lot more talent at Lakeland.&uot;
He may need the practice; a 5’4&uot;, Carson is one of the shortest Cavaliers. &uot;I’m used to that!&uot; he said of his height. &uot;I’ve been playing against taller people for my whole life!&uot;
