Claretta W. Britt

Mrs. Claretta White Britt of Suffolk died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003.
Mrs. Britt was a native of Suffolk, and was the widow of Vandious L. Britt Sr., and a daughter of the late Minnie Edwards White and Elliott Lunzy White Sr.
She was a graduate of Nansemond Collegiate Institute. She received both Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from Virginia State College (University), Petersburg.
Mrs. Britt was a devoted educator and taught in the Suffolk Public School System for over half a century.
She was a lifetime member of East End Baptist Church, where she once served as secretary of the Sunday School.
Mrs. Britt, a charter member of Bible Class No. 2, worked with the Girl Scouts when the group was first organized at the church.
Although the recipient of many accolades, she will be remembered best as the consummate mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, colleague, and friend.
She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Doctors Kuelewa Furaha of Oakland, Calif., and L.D. Britt of Norfolk; a sister, Adeline Newsome of Suffolk; two devoted nephews, William Newsome and Charles Johnson; a sister-in-law, Berma White of Suffolk; three daughters-in-law, Dr. Charlene Britt, Orenda Furaha and Victoria Britt; many grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, along with great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews; and many family friends.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in East End Baptist Church with Dr. Mark J. Croston Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
A wake will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Crocker Funeral Home.
