We’re looking forward to what the Great Dismal Swamp officials are cooking up for the refuge’s anniversary celebration this year and the next.
For starters, the National Wildlife Refuge System will be 10 years old come March 14, and next year the establishment of the Great Dismal refuge will be 30 years old.
The foresightedness of many people led to the creation of both. They knew even then of places around the country worthy of protection from commercial exploitation.
Today the Great Dismal remains a place for scientists, nature lovers, birdwatchers, and even hunters. Each has a place in the refuge system, especially the latter that help weed out an overpopulation of deer, for example.
As the weather warms, we encourage Suffolk residents to take the time to visit the swamp and see what a jewel that the city possesses.
