News-Herald receives Virginia Press awards

The Suffolk News-Herald brought home won five awards from the in the Virginia Press Association’s 2002 news and editorial competition.
Awards were presented Saturday during a ceremony at the Norfolk Marriott.
Publisher Andy Prutsok and Managing Editor Stephen Cowles won a first place in the editorial page competition. The paper advanced from second place in the same area last year.
Prutsok also took a first place in column writing. He placed second in this category in the 2001 competition
Jason Norman, the newspaper’s sports editor, earned second place in the sports feature writing category for
his story on Pop Warner football.
Reporter Allison T. Williams won second and third-place awards in the spot news writing division.
Both winning stories involved the coverage of fire fatalities that happened in Suffolk over the past year.
