HOLLYWOOD (AP) – Clark Gable’s widow today gave birth to an 8-pound boy.

Both Mrs. Kay Gable and the boy, delivered by Cesarean section, were reported in good condition at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. The time of birth was 7:48 am.

Gable, long-time movie hero, died in the same hospital last Nov. 16 of a heart attack. This was his first child and he was looking forward to fatherhood.

Kelly offers for council, Benton seeks re-election

Kermit R. Kelley, a newcomer, and Vice Mayor T. Benton today announced their candidacies for City Council in the June 13 municipal election.

Benton will be seeking his second full term. He was appointed to council in 1955 to fill the unexpired term of R.L. Woodward and elected in 1957.

Kelly, chairman on the city school board, has not sought election to public office before. Announcements by the two men came less than 48 hours after Mayor P. Griffin disclosed that he will not be a candidate for another term.

Local car salesmen cited for success

D.F. Joyner, R.E. Edwards and E.D. Simons of the Godwin Motor Co. Inc, Suffolk, were presented Ford Motor Co.’s 300-500 Club Award at a banquet in Virginia Beach Saturday.

The event honored high-ranking Ford dealership car and truck salesmen in the Richmond district.

Dutchmen begin diamond practice

Thirty-two candidates greeted Holland High School baseball coach Tom Pruden yesterday in the first team workout of the baseball season.

Among the 32, Coach Pruden can boast six players returning from last year’s championship squad that posted a 10-0 record.

With the entire pitching staff returning, along with proven catcher Clay Holland, the Dutchmen will be in a good position to repeat as Group II champs Fred Bew, John Dollar, and Wade Johnson are the hurling mainstays.

Johnson child dies in hospital

Carolyn L. Johnson, age 2 years, the daughter of Joseph L. and Mrs. Ruby Johnson of 304 Roanoke Avenue, died Saturday evening in Obici Memorial Hospital. The body was taken to Cooke Funeral Home. Arrangements are not complete.

Missett taking part in Navy visitation

William J. Missett, publisher of the News-Herald, is one of 26 eastern newspapermen taking part in a Navy-sponsored visit to the Virgin Islands to witness training programs.
