Lakeland High School athletic director Edward Smither (left) was forced into impromptu umpire duty when the officials failed to show for Lakeland’s softball game with visiting Churchland on Wednesday. The game had not been rescheduled. The outcome of the Nansemond River-Lafayette game was not available at press time.
