Lindsay Kelly knocked in two runs and Candace Judkins struck out 13 (two in the final inning) as Lakeland got things back on track with a 2-0 victory over visiting Hickory on Tuesday. The Lady Cavaliers, who lost all four of their games in the Beach Blast tournament in Virginia Beach last week, avenged the defeat the Lady Hawks handed them on March 21.

&uot;I didn’t even know it was the last inning,&uot; Judkins admitted. &uot;I thought I had another to go. This game definitely bumps our spirit up, and now we have to get some more wins to keep our momentum.&uot;

With one out in the fourth, Ashley McCord eked out an infield single, and Judkins drew a walk. Whitney James struck out, but a double steal moved both runners into scoring position.

Kelly looped a fly ball into shallow left field. Caught by the wind, the ball flew to the right, and landed just inside fair territory. It skittered toward the fence, and McCord and Judkins charged in for the game’s only runs.

&uot;I was thinking, ‘Fall, ball, fall!’ because a base hit scores a run,&uot; said Kelly. &uot;We were just determined to get hits.&uot;

The Lady Cavaliers (3-2 in the Southeastern district) will visit Oscar Smith on Thursday.
