Eleanor M. Powell

Eleanor McClung Powell, widow of John Henry Powell, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, in Suffolk. She was the daughter of the late Dr. O. Hunter McClung Sr., and Eugenia Harman McClung of Lexington.
Mrs. Powell attended Hollins College and graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensville with a degree in music. She served as organist and choir director of her churches for many years. Active in community affairs, Mrs. Powell was a former chairman of the Suffolk Arts Commission.
She is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Powell Darden of Richmond and Jean Powell Bell of Annapolis, Md.; sons, John Henry Powell Jr. of Raleigh, N.C. and Paul H. Powell of Richmond; granddaughter, Katherine Hobbs of Annapolis; sister, Mrs. John A Nesbitt of Catonsville, Md.; and brother, Dr. John H. McClung of Lexington.
The memorial; service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, in Holland Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Holland Christian Church, P.O. Box 7097, Holland Station, Suffolk, Va. 23437.
