Suffolk News-Herald

No one would expect to find a grandmother in the &uot;Crime Line Wanted&uot; files, however, here she is charged with a variety of serious crimes including being a pistol packin’ mama. She is joined by several other people wanted on felonies, some of which are violent crimes including rape and abduction.

This little ol’ 75-year old woman is alleged to be the operator of a gambling facility, and police also charged her with possession of a firearm and distribution of marijuana. She’s wanted on four direct indictments and being sought by police.

Just as with all Crime Line Wanted people, Mary Jane Massenburg, also known as granny with a gun, could be the means by which someone could gain up to $1,000 cash.

Anyone who knows where Massenburg may be found is asked to call Suffolk Crime Line at 539-1222, and if a caller’s information leads police to arrest Massenburg, the caller is eligible for the cash reward.

Callers to Crime Line never give their names and they are never asked to testify in court. In fact, as Crime Line Coordinator Mike Simpkins of the Suffolk Police says, police do not want your name; only the information about the people wanted on warrants for their arrest.

If the arrest is made, the Crime Line Board members will learn from Officer Simpkins that a felon has been apprehended. He will describe the charges against the person, providing the board with detailed information on the seriousness of the crimes.

Once they have that information, the board members discuss the amount of cash they believe should be paid to the caller. A vote is then taken, and Simpkins then waits for the caller to contact him again to let them know where and when to pick up the cash.

Even as they pick up the reward, the caller is not asked to give their name. They only have to give the person delivering the money a &uot;Crime Line Code&uot; number, provided to them by Simpkins.

There have been questions about the Crime Line message line that is in place to take a caller’s information when Simpkins is out of his office. That line is not tapped and there are no traces on the line.

&uot;All we want is information on the wanted person,&uot; said Simpkins. &uot;We truly are not interested in the identity of the caller. After all, those callers are doing a service for citizens of Suffolk when they help police get these people off the streets. We need the help of the citizens, who can serve as extra eyes and ears for law enforcement. With that help, we can improve the quality of life for all citizens.&uot;
