Two families were burned out of their homes Sunday as a fire swept through the duplex in which they lived. Fortunately, the victims escaped unharmed.
The Sunday afternoon fire at 204 Finney Ave. sent the two families into the street as it burned through the two story frame duplex, causing $20,000 in damages to the $50,000 structure. The blaze also destroyed the entire $20,000 worth of furnishings in the duplex. The owner of the duplex is Met Kwong Yeun, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Suffolk Fire Battalion Chief Tom Nichols spotted the fire at 3:12 p.m. as his battalion was returning from a fire at Butler Paper Company on Newport Street. That building was undamaged by the blaze since it burned only paper boxes outside the structure. The source of that fire is also undetermined.
