Staff report
Officer Fred Panton, Suffolk police information officer, has announced that a pedestrian was killed Friday after being hit by an automobile while he was walking across Godwin Bridge on Route 17 in Suffolk.
The incident took place around 3 p.m. A 17-year-old male from Isle of White County was driving a Mazda 626 heading north toward Carrollton. As the car crossed the Mills E. Godwin Bridge, it drifted into on-coming traffic then hit the pedestrian who was walking the opposite direction while pushing a bicycle. The pedestrian, a 45- to 50-year-old white male, whose identity is uncertain at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The impact threw the bicycle into the Nansemond River, from where it was later recovered by the Suffolk Police Department Dive Team.
The driver left the scene, but was soon found at his residence. The suspect vehicle was also recovered there and impounded by investigators.
Charges against the driver are pending the investigation’s outcome.
