New members inducted into Tom Smith Camp 1702

Tom Smith Camp No. 1702 and Lieutenant Commander Roy Pope and Commander Fred Taylor inducted its 100th and 101st members Boyd C. Hogan Sr. and Boyd C. Hogan Jr. into the organization. Father and son joined the Sons of Confederate Veterans as life members.
Matthew Thompson, the 12-year-old son of Camp 1702 member Dennis Thompson, was also inducted as a life member, making his the newest 12-year old to become a member. He follows in the footsteps of the current Camp Commander, Fred D. Taylor and also Spencer Hart, son of Past Commander Lee Hart. Taylor and Spencer Hart also joined at age 12.
Dennis Thompson and his son have at least four Confederate ancestors including 1st Corporal Elisha B. Casey, Co. E, 35th Infantry of GA Volunteers.
Currently, there are 33,000 member of Sons of Confederate Veterans world wide, and they are headquartered at Columbia, TN. Keith Morris serves as the Adjutant of Tom Smith Camp No. 1702 of Suffolk.
The Camp is named for Lt. Thomas Washington Smith who served in the 16th Virginia Infantry, and he is buried in Suffolk’s Cedar Hill Cemetery.
