John M. Young

John Max Young, 85, of the 1500 block of Dutch Rd., passed away in his residence on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003.
Born in Montgomery, Ala., he was the son of the late Silas T. & Lena Matthews Young and the widower of Ruth Offineer Young.
He was retired after 30 years of service in the U.S. Navy as a chief hospital corpsman serving during WW II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He had also retired as a food director from Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 4411, Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 60, Norfolk, McAlister Masonic Lodge No. 185, Portsmouth Valley of the Scottish Rite and was a past president of the Holland Ruritan Club. He was a Baptist by faith.
He is survived by a niece, Shandra Y. Wilkerson of Abbyville, Ala.; two nephews, F. Donald Young of Birmingham, Ala.; and Jack Young of Shelby, Ala. and caregivers Darlene Hubbard, Karen Murphy and Cathy Culbertson, his nurse and friend.
The graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10 in Holland Cemetery, Suffolk.
Friends may join the family for visitation at Harrell & Hill Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 7-8 p.m.
