From left, Frances Harris, Lauren Doughtie, Kay Gillette, Clate Aydlett, and Leah Powell made up the first-ever Suffolk Women’s Golf Association (SWGA) team. The women took part in the Virginia State Golf Association Annual Team Matches, which were held at the Kingsmill Woods Course from Aug. 27-29. They qualified in the second flight, defeating Williamsburg Country Club 31-23 in their first match (for each hole, a team received one point for a win and 1/2 for a tie). The Lady Suffolkians fell to Hermitage of Richmond in the Second Flight Championship, 29 1/2- 24 1/2. Because a sixth original member having to drop out, Doughtie was forced to play alone against two-woman teams in her matches. But it still wasn’t a problem for the 2003 State Junior Girls champion in the 16-17 division and mainstay on the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy golf team, as she won one match and halved another. Also on the team were Aydlett, a former champion of the Tidewater Women’s Golf Association; Gillette, a past champion of the SWGA and the Cedar Point Ladies Golf Association (CPLGA); Harris, past champion of the CPLGA; and Powell, 2003 SWGA champion.
