Though the Nansemond River defense, led by Eric Berry (left), Jeremy Peterson (center) and Dennis Conley (right) made things tough for the Lake Taylor offense all afternoon, the Titans managed to escape with a 26-12 victory. Trailing 20-12, the Warrior offense had the ball inside the Titan 40 twice in the last seven minutes, but were unable to convert. Berry and Conley were hampered by leg injuries late in the game, allowing Lake Taylor to score an insurance touchdown with 44 seconds to play. Quarterback Clarence Artis threw a touchdown pass to Conley early in the game. In other action, Lakeland brought new head coach Greg Rountree his first victory, a 26-6 romp over host Norcom. Eric Ruffin threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns, and Reggie Banks ran for 62 yards and a touchdown. Dujuan Everett rushed for 75 yards and a the first touchdown of his varsity career. Nansemond River heads to Churchland next week, while Lakeland visits Harbor Park to play Norview. The Suffolk teams do battle Sept. 26 at Nansemond River.
