Raney West

Raney West, 86, of Suffolk, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, in Obici Hospital.
He was a son of the late Lucy Herrin and Elonza McKinley West. He was also predeceased by an infant son, Charles Alan West, and a brother, E.M. West Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Loraine Horne West, a native of Burgaw, N.C.; one daughter, Helen Wimberly, and husband, James W. Jr., of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughters, Mary Helen and Caroline; brother; Harold West, and wife, Alberta, of Zuni, sister-in-law, Geraldine West of Williamsburg; six nephews; two nieces; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
Mr. West was a WWII veteran. He volunteered for the Army before Pearl Harbor. He trained soldiers at Fort Lee in the Infantry and attended OCS, after which he was assigned to the 344th Radar Maintenance Unit. He attained the rank of captain before he was discharged.
Through his years of occupation, Mr. West has been employed at Coca-Cola Bottling Co., John Hancock, and J.R. Wills and Sons.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Dr. Ruffin Alphin in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, with burial following at Holly Lawn Cemetery.
