Former Saint tennis star wins two in doubles tourney

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy alumni Nate Grover, now a student at Old Dominion University, teamed with Jeffrey Schnell of American University to defeated second-seeded Doug Stewart and Rylan Rizza of the University of Virginia 8-6 in the first round of a tennis tournament held at Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville Nov. 14-16.

The pair then defeated Derek Jose and Carl Hucken of the Citadel in the quarterfinals. In singles competition, Grover fell to Rizza in the first round.

Lakeland to hold Fall Sports Banquet Dec. 4

Lakeland High School will hold its Fall Sports Banquet at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4. Awards for cross-country, football, field hockey and cheerleading will be given out.

‘Canned Food’ basketball tournament to begin Nov. 22

The East Suffolk Federated League will be holding the 19th Annual Canned Food Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Nov. 22, 24-26 at Booker T. Washington Recreation Center.

Eight teams of 13 players each of youths ages 9-12 and 13-16, and men’s and women’s adult teams of 17 and over will take part. All team members are required to bring a canned food each day they are scheduled to play, and a donation will be made to the Suffolk Rescue Squad.
