‘Canned Food’ basketball tournament to begin today

The East Suffolk Federated League will be holding the 19th Annual Canned Food Thanksgiv-ing Basketball Tournament Nov. 22, 24-26 at Booker T. Washington Recreation Center.

Eight teams of 13 players each of youths ages 9-12 and 13-16, and men’s and women’s adult teams of 17 and over will take part. All team members are required to bring a canned food each day they are scheduled to play, and a donation will be made to the Suffolk Rescue Squad. The food will be donated to non-profit organizations.

The following Suffolk football players were named to the Honorable Mention All-South-eastern District team:

Nansemond River: Kori Tootoo, Chris Robertson

Lakeland: Reggie Banks, Vernon Cassell

Local AAU boys basketball teams holding tryouts

Anyone interested in participating in boys AAU 10-U Basketball should contact Erik Robinson at 619-7523. The Suffolk Blazers AAU 11U boys team is looking for additional players. Competitors can not turn 12 before Sept. 1, 2004.

Lakeland to hold Fall Sports Banquet Dec. 4

Lakeland High School will hold its Fall Sports Banquet at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4. Awards for cross country, football, field hockey and cheerleading will be given out.
