A Norfolk Southern train derailed at 11:50 a.m. Friday on the tracks near Liberty Street.

Suffolk authorities stayed on the scene until the rail company investigators arrived, said Lt. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department.

The accident involved a single locomotive engine, she said.
