A Wisconsin trucker was injured in an accident that closed both westbound lanes of traffic on U.S. Route 460 for nearly six hours Tuesday.
Richard P. Nigbur, 49, of Fort Atkinson, Wis., was taken to Obici Hospital after his 2001 tractor-trailer overturned on its right side around 11:17 a.m., said Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department. Efforts to find out the extent of his injuries were unsuccessful Tuesday.
According to police, Nigbur lost control of the truck after he started coughing, causing the vehicle’s right front wheels to slip off the roadway onto a soft shoulder and into a ditch before overturning.
Westbound traffic on U.S. Route 460 was rerouted to Suffolk via Pitchkettle Road for much of the afternoon, she said.
Nigbur was charged with reckless driving, George said.
Estimated damage to the vehicle was $20,000.
