The marketing students of Nansemond River High School had the opportunity to work on an advertising supplement, which was published in the Suffolk News-Herald.

The newspaper’s staff provided students with a tour of the News-Herald office, instruction on newspaper technology and computer technology, field sales training, the printing process, recycling by-products, use of equipment, and job descriptions of the employees.

Students were assigned responsibilities of mailing out a letter of introduction to a list of prospects from the database compiled by the students. They were also assigned to follow-up on accounts with a personal visit. Then, they secured a contract, logo and copy from the accounts. The students followed up with a thank you note for each account.

The Suffolk News-Herald is in the process of setting up future sales projects with the marketing department of Nansemond River High School. This project was very successful and the DECA students are planning an annual supplement with the paper. Future plans include training on the software capabilities in order to send a finished product to the newspaper.

The DECA Marketing Students sent a special thanks to Rebecca Hill, advertising director, Sue Barnes, advertising executive, and Stephen Cowles, managing editor, at the paper. All were extremely helpful to the marketing students throughout the entire school year.

DECA advisors at NRHS are S. Michele Duncan and J.B. Varney.
