Sweethearts sponsor Valentine Ball

The sweethearts of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority will help ring in Valentine’s Day with a party that will help send three local high school students to college.
The sorority is holding 55th Annual Sweetheart Ball, its largest annual fundraiser of the year, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Feb. 14 at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Pruden Boulevard.
Proceeds from the event will fund scholarships for students from Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Lakeland and Nansemond River high schools.
Shep Moss of Party Time Music will be disc jockey. Attire is semi-formal and set-ups will be available.
This event is sponsored by the sororities that make up Beta Sigma Phi, including Xi Delta Delta and their Queen Diana Klink; Laureate Alpha Lambda and Queen Midge Nichols; and Xi Beta Iota and Queen Jenell Klotz.
Klink has been a member of Xi Delta Delta for three years, and she has served as secretary, parliamentarian, ECC representative and she was the Chairwoman of the 2003 Sweetheart Ball. She has received pledge of the year and was honored with the girl of the year award.
She serves as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the office of Suffolk’s Commonwealth’s Attorney, C. Phillips Ferguson. She has also served with the National Night Out Committee, the Suffolk Citizens Community Services Committee, Reduction in Domestic Violence Task Force, the Suffolk Exile Coordination Committee, and she is an Executive Member of the Downtown Business Association. She also serves the Suffolk Neighborhood College and volunteers with Suffolk Public Schools.
Klink and her husband, Brian, have two children, Travis and Briana. The family lives in Suffolk.
Xi Beta Iota’s Queen is Jennell Evans Klotz, an 11-year-member of Beta Sigma Phi, and she has held every office in the sorority. She heads all the chapter’s ways and means projects.
Klotz lives in Suffolk with her husband, Dennis, and she is the daughter of Willie and Nell Evans, also of Suffolk. She enjoys working with her family and their family-owned business, Bunny’s Restaurant
Midge Nichols is Alpha Lambda’s Sweetheart Queen. She has been a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 22 years and holds the master degree. She has held almost every office and is the current treasurer. She has served on many committees with the group.
Nichols has received the Girl of the Year award several times and has also received Program of the Year.
She and her husband, Tom, live in Suffolk.
Tickets for the Sweetheart Ball are $10 per person or $20 per couple.
