Irene T. Williams

Mrs. Irene T. Williams, of 2005 Sprucewood Lane, Suffolk, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, in Obici Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosa A. and Joseph A. Taylor; husband, Godfrey Williams; daughter, Velma Wallace; and sisters, Ora Lightbourne, Catherine Taylor and Verlene Saunders.
She had retired from Suffolk Public Schools and worked as a secretary and later as a bookkeeper. She worked in East Suffolk Elementary School, East Suffolk High School, John F. Kennedy High School, and Suffolk High School.
She was the church mother of Bethany Cathedral Church UNJ COGIC, and was a former member of Gates of Heaven COGIC, under the leadership of the late Bishop M.L. Johnson Sr. She was a former choir member, president of the Pastor’s Aide, and a member of the Hospitality and Finance committees.
She is survived by one son, Michael Williams Sr. of Chesapeake; one foster daughter, Natasha Young (Vernon) of Connecticut; one brother, Joseph L. Taylor of New York; three sisters, Rev. Thelma Norfleet (Cleophus) of Suffolk; Louise T. Ashby of Chesapeake; and Frances Baird (Brandford) of Arizona; one son-in-law, Daryl Wallace of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Cynese and Michael Williams Jr., Miata and Brianna Wallace of Chesapeake; two goddaughters, Joan Jones and Angela Hillard of Suffolk; four foster sisters, devoted friend M. Celestine Johnson Young, Gloria N. Morris of Suffolk, Marion Porter, and Annie Block of Portsmouth; four foster brothers, Bishop M.L. Johnson Jr., Willie Jones Jr. of Suffolk, and Elders Willie Jones Sr. and Jesse Johnson of Norfolk.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Tabernacle Christian Church with Bishop M.L. Johnson Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
