John H. Bellamy Jr.

John H. Bellamy Jr., 60, a native of Suffolk and a resident of 1822 Ft. Rice St., Petersburg, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at his residence.

He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Suffolk. He received his bachelor and master’s degrees from Virginia State University, Petersburg.

At the onset of his illness, he was employed by Morehouse University as the dean of student affairs. Prior to that he was the assistant director of student affairs, Foster Hall, at Virginia State University. His love of sports led him to officiate basketball games. He was instrumental in starting the Intramural Games at Virginia State University and the Student Government Association at Morehouse. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

He was an Episcopalian.

Mr. Bellamy’s survivors are his wife, Oriette W. Bellamy; a beloved son, Karon L. Winston of Petersburg; a granddaughter, Brionna Winston of Petersburg; a faithful and caring caregiver, Robert Crenshaw; his mother, Mrs. Madelaine M. Wilson of Suffolk; a sister, the Rev. Kaye Bellamy Johnson; his brother-in-law, Bert Johnson of Suffolk; a niece, Diedre A. Hicks, and her son, Jonathan Hicks of Suffolk; nephews, Sgt. Christopher A. Hicks, U.S. Army (wife, Latoya), Sgt. Bertrum D. Johnson, U.S. Army, and Keith Johnson of Suffolk; and many cousins, classmates and friends to cherish his memory.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday, April 10 in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 142 Tynes St., Suffolk, by the Rev. Father Joseph Green Jr. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (Ramp Building Fund), or the American Heart Association.

The family will receive guests at the home of his mother at 1115 Custis Road.
