Joseph Harris Sr.

Joseph Harris Sr., 95, of 36113 Seacock Chapel Road, Zuni, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in the Nansemond Pointe Rehab and Healthcare Center in Suffolk.

A native of Southampton County, he was the son of the late Richard Harris and Mary Sharpe Harris, and was the widower of Lora Hicks Harris. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Johnson Harris, and four sons, Lorenzo, Joseph Jr., John Lee, and Samuel.

He was a member of Gilfield Baptist Church of Ivor for over 83 years. He served as treasurer of the Sunday School and a member of the Deacon Board. In 1996, he was named the father of the Church.

He had retired from farming in Southampton County after more than 70 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Biggs of Suffolk, and Eloise Jones of Lawrenceville; two stepsons, Carver Diggs of Smithfield, and Issac Diggs of Knoxville, Tenn.; three stepdaughters, Elna Raves of Ivor; Marian Bonnor of Chesapeake; and Valarie Evens of Portsmouth; three daughters-in-law, Catherine Harris of Ivor; Mary Louis Harris of Zuni; and Beatrice Harris of Dayton, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, eight step-grandchildren; and five step-great- grandchildren.

The celebration of life service will be held at noon April 15 at Gilfield Baptist Church with the Rev. E.E. Mitchell, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 1342 Baltic St., Suffolk.

The visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, in Crocker Funeral Home.
