A senior at each of the city’s three high schools will be tapped to receive a $1,000 scholarship in memory of the late Rozanne Brown, a former agent with Chorey & Associates Realty Ltd.

The scholarships bearing the company’s name is his way of perpetuating the memory of a woman who was greatly loved by all who knew her, said owner William L. &uot;Billy&uot; Chorey.

&uot;Rozanne was an agent who was with Chorey & Associates from 1992 to the springtime of 1997,&uot; he said. &uot;She died suddenly in July 1997 from cancer at the age of 51.

&uot;These scholarships are in memory of someone who was such a dear person and anyone who knew her absolutely loved her.&uot;

Jane Butler, Brown’s sister, said her sister did not suffer long, and that she had no symptoms at all until she began experiencing problems with her shoulder. Later, doctors discovered lesions on her lungs.

&uot;She didn’t want to believe she was as sick as she was,&uot; said Butler. &uot;It was a devastating blow for me then, and it still is.

&uot;I can only say that I am grateful for what Chorey Realty is doing for her memory. She thought the world of Billy and the people she worked with.

&uot;They were so good to her while she was sick. Billy and his family, in particular, were so wonderful.

&uot;It is such a tribute to her that Billy wanted to do this.&uot;

Throughout her career, Brown was a tribute to real estate profession, Chorey said.

Brown was outgoing, hardworking and dedicated to her career, he said.

&uot;Rozanne had a sense of humor unmatched by anyone I have ever known and those in the office and other people who knew her think and talk about her often,&uot; said Chorey. &uot;I have maintained contact with her sister, Jane Butler, who emulates Rozanne in so many ways. She is a genuine source of inspiration.&uot;

Besides helping carry on Brown’s legacy, the scholarships will also be a great benefit to local students choosing to continue their educations.

&uot;We want to financially assist Suffolk’s students who are motivated to maximize their potential by continuing to educate themselves beyond high school,&uot; said Chorey. &uot;The $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually on the basis of student scholarship, achievement, school and community involvement, and leadership.&uot;

A scholarship will be awarded to students at Lakeland and Nansemond River high schools and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Chorey said.

Scholarship applicants must be a graduating senior with a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and/or rank in the top 20 percent of their class. A copy of the student’s transcript and three letters of recommendation from unrelated adults must accompany each application. One recommendation must come from a guidance counselor, principal, or teacher.

The recipient must be accepted at an accredited institution of higher learning where the student is committed to a full-time curriculum.

Finally, the applicant must complete an essay of 300 words or less explaining how the scholarship will help them and why they deserve the award.

The $1,000 scholarship check will be sent directly to the student’s chosen college or university. Chorey & Associates Realty Ltd. will select the recipients.

Scholarship applications are available from Chorey & Associates, located at 330 W. Constance Road. The completed applications must be returned to the agency no later than April 30.
