It was truly a day of excitement around the Suffolk public school baseball and softball diamonds, as three of the four local games ended in one-run Suffolk victories. Tyren River scored two runs, and Eric Berry, Chris Williams and Will Hirsch one each in a 5-4 win over visiting Deep Creek. Hirsch also struck out nine, including two in the seventh.
Lakeland also won 5-4 in softball over Indian River, with Megan Hecker, Katelyn Smither, Ashley McCord, Rachel Bailor and Lindsay Kelly crossing in the plate. Kelly struck out six in a complete-game performance (Nansemond River fell to the Lady Hornets, 6-3).
But it was the Lakeland baseball team that turned in the performance of the day. A pair of homers gave Indian River a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning. Robert Hedrick finally gave Lakeland some momentum with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, and Chase Nelson scored the team’s second run.
Daniel Cross opened the fifth with a double. Hedrick walked and Nelson singled to load the bases. Cross scored when Lainhart grounded out, and Brian Ashburn blasted a three-run home run to take back the contest. Hedrick held the Braves scoreless from the mound, and Lakeland had made its way back.
Nansemond-Suffolk Academy came out on top in baseball, defeating visiting Cape Henry, 3-0. The score of the teams’ softball game was not reported.
