Cavaliers shine in FCCLA conference

Congratulations to several students from Suffolk Public Schools who earned honors of distinction at the Virginia Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership and Recognition Conference held April 23-25 in Virginia Beach.

Lakeland High School students who earned STAR event awards included Ivory Richardson, bronze (3rd place) in job interview; Darin Thorpe, silver (2nd place) in breads; Chantal Mayes, bronze (3rd place) in charcuterie & garde manger; Jennifer Gelbaugh, bronze (3rd place) in cooking hot food /displayed cold; Briana Bruce, silver (2nd place) in decorated cake; and LaRonda Sweat, silver (2nd place) in patisserie/confectionery.

The Lakeland High FCCLA Chapter also earned awards in national community service projects STOP the Violence and FACTS (Families Acting on Community Traffic Safety).

In addition, the Lakeland chapter earned a State Program of Work, Chapter of Character plaque and a Membership Milestone (50+) trophy.

The Nansemond River High School FCCLA Chapter also earned a State Program of Work, Chapter of Character plaque and a Membership Milestone (100+) trophy.

China Rawls of the Lakeland FCCLA completed her term as state vice president of community service and led the weekend’s activities. Ashley Peterson of the Lakeland FCCLA was elected and installed as the state vice president of membership for 2004-2005. Charlisha Beamon of the Nansemond River FCCLA was recognized with a &uot;Spirit of FCCLA&uot; Award for her contributions and FCCLA spirit shown during the conference weekend.

Other awards included Barbara Edwards, Lakeland teacher and friend to FCCLA, receiving a Distinguished Service Award. Brenda Smith, Lakeland FCCLA Adviser, received the Master Adviser Award. Dr. Emily Richardson, the school division’s Coordinator of Career and Technical Education, was awarded an Honorary Membership in Virginia FCCLA.

Lakeland High School’s Junior Air Force ROTC color guard led the presentation of colors during the opening session.
