Horton bats in 2-0 victory

Heather Horton drove in both runs and Linley Theroux allowed just four hits in a complete-game performance as Nansemond River defeated visiting Hickory 2-0 on Friday afternoon. The Warriors fell 7-4 in baseball.

Lakeland came up short on the Great Bridge diamonds, with the softball team falling 2-0 and the baseball team 4-1. The Warrior squads will host Indian River Tuesday, while Lakeland hosts Deep Creek.

Blazers golf tourney to be held June 23

The Suffolk Blazers will hold a charity golf classic on June 23 at the Nansemond River Golf Club to raise money for the team’s expenses in traveling to national competition in late June, which could run into the five figure mark.

An entry fee of $95 includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, free drinks and lunch. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams, and the format is four-person best ball team. A raffle ceremony will be held afterward. For more information, please call 735-3814.

DAA looking for youth football, cheering coaches

The Downtown Athletic Association is recruiting football and cheerleading coaches for the 2004 Pop Warner Football season. Participants range from 5 to 15 years of age.

Tidewater Storm tryouts held in early June

Open tryouts for the Tidewater Storm U16 field hockey team, which will head to Florida in November to compete in the United States Field Hockey Festival, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. June 1 and 3 at Lakeland High School.
