Gladys Swanner Jones, 91, died June 21, 2004, in Nansemond Pointe.
Born Sept. 1, 1912, in Norfolk, Mrs. Jones was the daughter of the late Amanda Waters and Henry Ophus Swanner, and the widow of William Mason Jones Jr. She was preceded in death by her daughter Nancy J. Glover, three brothers, and a sister.
Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Holland High School and Kee’s Business School. She was a member of Suffolk Christian Church, West Memorial Bible Class, the Adult Church Choir for over 50 years, was a Sunday School teacher for 30 years and Circle Leader. She was the past president of Lakeview Heights Garden Club and American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia J. Branche of Suffolk; son, William Mason Jones III of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Susan R. Switzer, William C. Branche Jr. and wife Ann Branche, Ann G. Hanbury and husband, Paul Hanbury; and great granddaughter, Emma Mason Branche.
The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Michael Halley and the Rev. Mark Burns. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home & Crematory. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice or to the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, Va. 23439.
