Editor, the News-Herald:
Basketball is a very interesting sport today. I loved it very much 30 years ago. It’s a sport which, if you fall in love with, you’ll always love it. The city of Suffolk has always produced very good basketball players.
Basketball players today are making millions of dollars once they leave high school and go on to the pro rank.
Suffolk will have King’s Fork High this year.
The John F. Kennedy High team of 1974 was the best basketball team I’ve ever seen in Suffolk Petersburg High ’74 and John F. Kennedy High School were the best two teams I’ve seen.
Spencer Mayfield had won the state title in 1974, during the ’80s, the ’90s and maybe 2000-01. It was sad that Marque Cooke headed to Virginia Tech, but didn’t win the state title.
I would love to see another state title team from Suffolk within the next 10 years. Suffolk schools need a man with experience and a winning record.
Spencer Mayfield’s record speaks for itself. Suffolk Schools need Spencer Mayfield to coach basketball again.
